Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
