The White House confirmed the start of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.
