As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into a figure of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense regarding him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for other people, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and direct truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of profound affection centered on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Best of Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and appeals to the best parts of American history.

The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to that which renders it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of the Savior.
