The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
